No Yeast Whole-Wheat Garlic Breadsticks

Garlic bread is a classic side dish which was originated in Italy. This bread has a topping of garlic, some herbs and butter or olive oil and at times even clarified butter is used. Eating garlic can help us detoxify the heavy metals in our body and it also helps in improving our bone health. This bread is usually roasted or toasted and tends to bring out the flavor of garlic. I really love domino’s garlic breadsticks, so I decided to make these at home.

I gathered all the ingredients. I had whole wheat flour, garlic, mixed herbs and the other ingredients.

But when I finally started working on the recipe, I realised that I didn’t have yeast. After thinking for a minute or two, I decided to experiment with a recipe without using yeast.

Steps to bake garlic breadsticks:


INGREDIENTS:

  1. 1 cup Milk

  2. 2 tbsp Vinegar

  3. 1.5 cup Whole-wheat flour

  4. 1/2 tbsp Sugar

  5. 1 tbsp Salt

  6. 3 tbsp Thyme (2 tbsp required for dressing)

  7. 8- 10 Finely chopped Garlic cloves

  8. 1/2 tbsp Baking soda

  9. 1 tbsp Baking powder

  10. 1 tbsp Oregano ( required for dressing)

  11. 3 tbsp Ghee / butter (1 tbsp required for greasing)


INSTRUCTIONS :

  1. Preheat oven to 180C/350F or Kadai for 10 minutes.

  2. Mix milk and vinegar in a vessel and keep them aside for 10 minutes.

  3. Add whole wheat flour, salt, sugar, 1 tbsp thyme, half garlic cloves, baking soda and baking powder in a separate vessel and mix these dry ingredients.

  4. Now add the mixture of milk and vinegar to these dry ingredients and prepare a sticky dough.

  5. Add 2 tbsp ghee or butter and knead the dough for 2-3 minutes.

  6. Roast the leftover garlic and this will be used for the dressing.

  7. Mix 2 tbsp thyme, oregano, roasted garlic and 1 tbsp butter in a small bowl.

  8. Grease a bread tin or a small cake tin with butter.

  9. Now grease the hands with butter and collect the dough to pour it into the cake tin.

  10. Apply the prepared garlic butter on the dough.

  11. Bake in a preheated oven OR on a low flame in kadai for 35-40 minutes. Keep checking after every 15 minutes.

  12. Check to make sure the centre is cooked by inserting a skewer: it should come out clean.

  13. Turn the bread out onto a cooking rack and let it cool down for at least 15 minutes.

  14. Cut the bread into 1 to 1.25 inch slices.

  15. You can roast these garlic breadsticks on a griller or you can enjoy them as it is with your favourite dip.
